Shared book reading is particularly fun when your child thinks a book is exciting. So choose a book for shared book reading together.

To give your child a choice, it’s good to have several books at home. They should be placed where your child can access them themselves at any time.

You can also go to a library together, look for books there and borrow them.

Sometimes children want to be read the same book over and over again. This is important for the child’s development: Through repetition, your child understands the content more and more and can memorize the new words or signs better.

Tips for book selection

Read the text

The text in the picture book should match your child’s stage of development.

Books with simple and little text are suitable for children who are just beginning to understand a language. Books with lots of text are suitable for children who already understand more.

It’s best to start with short stories. Gradually you can read more difficult and longer books.

Look at the pictures

Pictures can help to understand the book better. However, there are also picture books in which the pictures are difficult to understand. This is also exciting for you and your child. You can talk about the pictures together.

Identify the topic of the picture book

Children enjoy topics that they already know something about or that are completely new to them. Interesting stories, for example, are those in which the characters

are of a similar age,

have the same hobbies,

have a similar everyday life

or are deaf or hard of hearing.

Check the age indication

The age indication on the book is not suitable for all children. Children who are deaf or hard of hearing may need more time to develop their language skills and the texts may still be too difficult.
